Have you thought about who is behind the Shiro Matcha brand?

Shiro Matcha is a matcha supplier based in Queensland, delivering authentic matcha across Australia. The Shiro Matcha sales team consists of five members, working from both Australia and Japan, supporting various brands across Australia.

In today’s article, I will introduce everyone who works to bring matcha to your home or business! I interviewed my co-workers asking why they started working at Shiro Matcha and what they enjoy about their job.

Why do you work in Sales at Shiro Matcha?

As someone of Japanese and Australian heritage, I wanted to work in a role that connects me to both of my cultures. I have always loved meeting people and hearing about what they're passionate about. To me, cafés and restaurants are more than just places to enjoy a meal. They're spaces where people can connect, experience different cultures through cuisine, and build meaningful relationships, becoming a regular to the store or even as someone who is visiting on a trip.

Being able to support businesses that create these spaces, with both my knowledge and my cultural background is incredibly rewarding. If I can help make matcha more accessible and enjoyable through these spaces, I feel I've done a job well done!

What is your favourite part of your job?

My favorite people to work with are those just starting their business. Their passion is contagious, and it's exciting to support them as they bring their vision to life. One of my favorite moments was receiving a call from a client after their opening day, simply to thank us and share how successful it had been.

Experiences like these motivate me to keep supporting passionate business owners—helping them create spaces where even more people can discover something new, have conversations and build community.

Why did you start working at Shiro Matcha?

I first started working at Shiro Gelato & Snack in Southport, serving gelato and drinks including matcha lattes. While working there, customers often asked me questions like how to choose high-grade matcha powder, and how to make a good matcha latte. It was always frustrating to realise how little I understood about the product that I was serving, and I wanted to deepen my product knowledge.

After working at the store for a while, I was offered a role as sales executive for Shiro Matcha. It felt like the perfect opportunity for me to improve customer experience by learning more about matcha and other products. Also, as a Japanese person who moved to Australia, I’d always wanted to connect Japan and Australia in some way.

What do you enjoy about working at Shiro Matcha?

As a matcha lover myself, it has been truly rewarding to be part of a team to spread matcha across Australia. Recently I went to Sydney to take part in an exhibition called the Cafe & Coffee show. There, I had the opportunity to meet many cafe owners. As much as I enjoy talking with them, I also felt a strong sense of responsibility for the quality of the product we distribute.

One of my rewarding experiences was my interaction with my first customer. She was considering using our matcha powder to develop a new matcha drink for her cafe. While she was testing out our matcha powder, I supported her further by sharing our matcha recipes. Later, she came back to me with her new menu, built around our recipe. A moment like that is truly meaningful for me in this job.

I’ve also realised that my experience working at Shiro Gelato & Snack has helped me to better understand our customers. As a sales executive, I try to always keep in mind the customer who will ultimately be purchasing the product.

Aki

This is me, Aki. I work at Shiro Matcha as sales & marketing coordinator.

I first started working at Shiro Gelato & Snack as a graphic design assistant. I’d known Shiro Gelato & Snack since it opened, so it was such a great opportunity for me to bring my design skills to such a popular brand. After working as a designer for three months, I was asked to join the Shiro Matcha team as a sales & marketing coordinator to help expand the team. It was an exciting move, given how much popularity matcha has gained over the last few years.

Since I started working at Shiro Matcha, I've had many opportunities to talk with cafe and restaurant owners, and what has truly impressed me is their dedication and effort in serving the customers authentic matcha drinks. As a Japanese person, I love seeing a traditional drink like matcha gain this level of popularity.

Shiori

This is Shiori, our main sales executive. She supports the Shiro Matcha team from Japan.

How did you start working at Shiro?

I went to university in the US. Being away from Japan made me realise how much Japan has to offer, including its culture and food, and I started appreciating it even more. Since then, I’ve always wanted to do a job that connects Japan with the rest of the world. After I moved to Australia, I decided to work at Shiro Matcha as a sales executive because I deeply resonate with the brand’s vision.

What do you value as a sales executive?

What I value most is building trustworthy relationships with customers. I always try to deeply understand each store and brand so I can tailor my suggestions to their needs. I want to be someone they can turn to when discussing their needs and concerns and someone who understands them. Through my experience at Shiro Matcha, I’ve encountered customers with all kinds of different needs and priorities, and I find it incredibly rewarding to connect with them and support their business through our products. Although I’ve moved back to Japan and now I work remotely, I want to maintain the strong relationship I’ve built with customers.

Can you please share any memorable experiences with customers?

Last year, I had the opportunity to join many events in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. During those events, I spoke with many customers in person and always received very positive feedback about our matcha drinks. Every interaction I had left me feeling truly rewarded.

I’d love to be someone customers can talk to about more than just matcha or our products. Everyday life, travel recommendations in Japan, that sort of thing.

Mayu

Lastly, this is Mayu, our team lead! She is the backbone of the sales team, supporting both customers and the whole team!

Why did you decide to work at Shiro?

Like Shiori, I also resonated with Shiro Matcha’s vision of delivering an authentic matcha product and experience, and spreading Japanese culture in Australia. Shiro started as a cafe in Southport, and the brand has since grown into a partner to provide ceremonial-grade matcha to cafes and businesses across Australia. As a sales executive, I want to help create an authentic matcha-drinking experience for everyone.

What excites you about the future of Shiro Matcha?

I see great potential for authentic matcha products in Australia. I’m excited to watch the Shiro Matcha brand grow, as matcha becomes part of daily life for more and more people here.
